Cutting and Serving Boards
My most recent project was to make a variety of cutting and serving boards out of black walnut, oak, and cedar. Some of these boards are charred with a blow torch in an attempt at the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban style of cedar wood charring which I also performed on oak and walnut. The charring makes the wood UV, weather, rot, and bug resistant and makes for a unique look and interesting creation process.
Two of these boards have runic inscriptions of Gnomic/Wisdom sayings from Hávamál in the Old Norse Poetic Edda. The chosen verses for these boards deal with friendship and hospitality which I thought was most fitting for something which can be used for entertaining.
The axe/cleaver styled board has a verse which translates:
34. It’s a great detour to a bad friend’s house,
even though he lives on the route;
but to a good friend’s the way lies straight,
even though he lives far off.
Afhvart mikit er til ills vinar
þótt á brautu búi
en til góðs vinar liggja gagnvegir
þótt hann sé firr farinn.

The more board shaped example has the inscription:
47. I was young once, I traveled alone,
then I found myself going astray;
rich I thought myself when I met someone else,
for man is the joy of man.
Ungr var ek fórðum fór ek einn saman
þá varð ek villr vega
auðigr þóttumsk er ek annan fann
maðr er manns gaman.

Floating Log LED Lamps
Black Walnut floating log lamps with multi-colored LEDs controlled with remotes. All wood from southern Minnesota.
Oak Slab Table
Photographs from Dora Lake and the Chippewa National forest of northern Minnesota. Beavers and loons live on Dora Lake and the Big Fork River and wild black bears congregate at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary near Orr, Minnesota.
Black Walnut Log Stand Lamp
This stand lamp is made out of a black walnut branch from Waseca, MN. The lamp has a remote control with changeable LED colors which shine out of the floating log segments. This and most other items on this website are for sale! Send me an email if you have any interest.
I attempted the style of a Japanese artist I saw on Pinterest for this table. The hickory legs are inset into the black walnut table top and level with the surrounding wood. The two black walnut live-edge boards used for the top are stitched together using hickory butterfly inlays placed above each hickory under support board and in the center of the table-top.
I made these simple business card holders out of scrap black walnut and plum wood. The agates are from the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota.
These tables are the result of experimenting with butterfly/bow tie router inlays and I think they turned out well. The legs are raw steel coated with furniture wax for protection. The primary boards are black walnut which my great-grandfather Ezra cut and milled around 50 years ago and the inlays are from cherry.
